Review: GojiLania Goji Blends
March 21st, 2009
Although Gojilania’s flagship product is a pure goji berry juice, I’ve decided to review their brand-new line of mixed berry drinks for a number of reasons, but the main one is that the mixed berry drinks have more to offer and I think they’ll be more popular than the goji-only product.
These drinks combine goji juice with a second berry (many of my favorites) to make four different mixtures. Goji with acai, pomegranate, mangosteen, or blueberry. It’s clear that each of these mixtures is heaviest in goji (the company’s specialty) with the second berry peeking through to give you a unique flavor combination. Pineapple juice, apple juice and other ingredients are used to sweeten and round-out the mixtures. There are no artificial ingredients or preservatives.
Overall, the quality of the juices is quite high and although it’s made from concentrates, the taste is not too diluted. All of the fruit combinations offer excellent antioxidant power and great taste.

Aren’t these liquid juice products all pasteurized and thus isn’t much of the nutritional value destroyed? I have read about that so many times in reviews of exotic superfood formulations that are in liquid form. Is it true?
By the way, thanks for very nice review sites.. including your greendrinks, etc.

Just for clarification.. you usually mention a product has been “flash” pasteurized if that is the case.. I am referring to situations like GojiLania shown above where it is not mentioned.

Hi Randy,
It’s true that drinks that contain liquid juices are almost always pasteurized. If they are not, then they have to include a “warning” that says they may contain harmful bacteria. Not all nutritional value is destroyed by the heating process, but some is. Much of the nutrition that you are expecting from these products remains, such as essential vitamins and minerals. Still, it’s true that powdered drinks will be more “whole” than liquids. But remember, the quality of ingredients in powdered drinks varies widely, so you can’t be 100% sure what you’re getting with those either. I’ve personally compared and evaluated many dry juice powders and the variation in quality from one to the next can be enormous. The drying process, storage, and quality of the fruit all affect the end result.

I’ve just posted a brief article about pasteurization of juices. This will hopefully explain what happens during the process. It’s called Juice Drinks, Pasteurization and the Loss of Nutrients.
