Review: Zola Açaí
March 14th, 2009
The bottle says “Antioxidants, Omegas, and Energy” and this product tries to offer a balance of those three main things. The antioxidants are from the acai berries, the omegas are from the soy lecithin and the energy is from pure cane sugar and guarana. Having spent a lot of time in Brazil myself, I’m very familiar with and not opposed to organic guarana. If used carefully, it’s an excellent energetic and does not give you that jittery caffeine buzz that other caffeine sources do. I’m also not opposed to pure cane sugar. In fact, unless you’re diabetic, I think it’s probably the best kind of sugar you can use if you want pure energy.
This product is quite well priced at only $2.99 per bottle ($0.25 per ounce), but you have to decide it this is the kind of formulation you want. It’s primarily a great-tasting, somewhat healthy, organic beverage. If you’re looking for a powerful antioxidant red berry drink, this is probably not the product for you.

Taste
Sweet, but not sugary, slightly creamy (from the lecithin and unfiltered acai berries) with a mild-to-medium taste of acai berry. Tastes more like a juice cocktail than a refreshing fruit drink or red berry drink.

ok, so a bottle is 12oz and serving size is 80z, so how many times a day do you drink it. 80z once a day or 12oz a day?

At the present time, companies can use any “serving size” they want, without any restriction or regulation from the FDA. One box of crackers may use a serving size of 5 crackers, while another uses 12. Most bottled drinks use the size of the bottle as a single serving, but not all, as is the case with Zola Acai. So why manipulate the serving size? Usually manufacturers use the serving size that gives them the best looking “Nutritional Facts” panel.
For the crackers, a smaller serving size may lower the fat content per serving enough that the label can show zero (0) trans fats per serving. In the case of a drink, it may be both sugars and fats that they want to down-play by lowering the serving size.
So how much should you drink? Oh, heck…drink the whole bottle, as long as your body responds well. For some, Acai can be difficult to digest. For others, it produces a “nervous” energy that may not be pleasant. Let your body decide what’s best.

Great Mona Vie taste with pulp but watch out for the guarana buzz, two bottles has my heart racing and my ears ringing for days…
