Review: Maqui SuperBerry

May 3rd, 2009

The Maqui Superberry is one more those amazing berries that comes from South America. Maqui berries are believed to have more antioxidants than Acai, which is quite amazing, and more anthocyanins and polyphenols than red wine. This product is a concentrated drink, which you can dilute with water or a mild juice.

This concentrated drink has a few more berries added, like organic blackberries, which are well known antioxidants, elderberries, which are awesome for inflammation. The raspberries are rich in Vitamin C and minerals which increases energy.

This drink is powerful tasting and quite rich; it’s sweetened with agave nectar. You can take a tablespoon straight or dilute it in a few ounces of water. For comparison purposes, we’ve used 8oz of water for dilution, which makes it comparable in price to the dry, powder mixes — which are generally cheaper (and more nutritious) than the ready-to-drink liquids.

Manufacturer’s Description

Taste

The taste is not sugary, but it is sweet, and quite tart. The berry flavors are quite strong, unless you dilute the “suggested serving” of a tablespoon into 8 ounces of water, which will make the drink a bit weak tasting. Better to mix in half that much water. If you take it pure, the texture is thick, like a Smoothie.

Pros

Maqui Superberry is a great drink with natural ingredients and very low in calories. It has a super-high concentration of antioxidants and the price is right.

Cons

The price seems high until you compare it on a serving-size basis. You can find among the ingredients potassium sorbate which could be replaced for any another, healthier product. I also don’t like the company web site, product label and related materials, as they have a slightly scammy feel to them.

Price per Bottle = $39.95 (38 servings)

Love this drink – but the bottle is poorly designed as it leaks when pouring and if laid down sideways for transport.
